SMT Assembly: High Speed, High Accuracy, High Reliability
Surface-mount technology is at the heart of electronics manufacturing. PCBONLINE operates four fully automated SMT lines to handle everything from micro-SMD components to large and complex ICs.
Each of our SMT lines includes:
- An automatic solder paste printing machine
- SPI (Solder Paste Inspection)
- Two high-speed YAMAHA YSM20R pick-and-place machines
- One functional YAMAHA YSM10 pick-and-place machine
- AOI before reflow
- 10-zone reflow soldering oven
- AOI after reflow for final SMT inspection
Our advanced SMT lines ensure stable, accurate, and defect-free SMT assembly for demanding applications, meeting soldering requirements for PCBs like high-density, thick-copper, flexible, high-Tg FR4, ceramic substrate, etc.
Among the machines on an SMT line, solder paste printing, SMD pick-and-place, reflow soldering, and dual AOI are the most important steps for ensuring PCB assembly quality. Details are below.
Automated solder paste printing and SPI
The SMT process starts with stencil printing. We use high-precision automatic solder paste printers that ensure uniform paste deposition, perfect alignment, and reduced bridging and soldering defects.
After printing, our solder paste inspection system checks the thickness, volume, area, and uniformity of the solder paste. This prevents defects at the earliest stage, ensuring an excellent foundation for the entire assembly process.
High-speed pick-and-place with YAMAHA YSM20R
Our SMT lines are equipped with two YAMAHA YSM20R high-speed placement machines, designed for handling extremely small components with maximum precision. Their capabilities are:
- Placement accuracy is suitable even for 01005 and 0201 components
- High placement speed reaching 280 components per PCB
- Excellent performance with small passives, logic ICs, CSPs, and fine-pitch QFNs
Versatile placement with YAMAHA YSM10
For larger ICs and specialized components, we use a YAMAHA YSM10 functional placement machine. It supports:
- Larger SMD components
- Odd-shaped components
- Placement capability of 96 components per PCB
- High/mix/low/medium volume production
Reflow soldering with AOI before and after
To create strong solder joints, all SMT boards pass through multi-zone reflow ovens with carefully controlled thermal profiles tailored to PCB thickness, material, and component specifications.
Before reflow, we run AOI to confirm correct placement. After reflow, another AOI inspection ensures that every solder joint is proper before the boards move to further processes.
X-ray inspection for hidden joints
For SMD components like BGA, LGA, QFN, and CSP, visual inspection is not enough. PCBONLINE uses professional X-ray inspection systems to examine:
- Ball grid array solder joints
- Inner-layer via-in-pad structures
- Voiding analysis
- Hidden electrical connections
The X-ray inspection ensures 100% reliability for high-density assemblies.
FAI (first article inspection) for prototypes
Before mass production begins, we conduct First Article Inspection to ensure the prototype PCBA is qualified. We use the FAI machine to check every component value on the PCBA to ensure it is within the tolerance range.
The FAI guarantees that every detail aligns with customer expectations before large-scale manufacturing proceeds.
THT Assembly: Stable, Strong, and Efficient
Through-hole components require through-hole soldering, which provides mechanical strength and efficient thermal dissipation. PCBONLINE operates four THT assembly lines, each engineered for efficiency and quality.
Our THT process includes:
- Component insertion: Our operators place components through PCB holes and position the PCBA in precision fixtures for wave soldering.
- Wave soldering: The PCBA passes over the solder waves in an automatic wave soldering machine, reliably soldering the THT component leads to the PCB hole walls.
- Lead trimming: After soldering, the component leads on the other side are neatly cut to 1mm to 2mm.
For PCBAs that cannot undergo wave soldering due to heat-sensitive areas, we offer selective soldering to replace wave soldering. Selective soldering enables consistent heating only at required locations and zero thermal damage to nearby components.
Component Warehouse with Quality Control
A stable supply of authentic components is essential for reliable production. PCBONLINE maintains a dedicated component warehouse equipped with:
- Constant temperature and humidity control
- Smart environmental monitoring
- Dedicated MSL (Moisture Sensitivity Level) storage
- X-ray inspection for critical components and ICs before warehousing
- Real-time ERP tracking and barcode management
All purchased components undergo visual and electrical inspection, packaging and label verification, anti-counterfeit checks, and moisture control procedures.
Our controlled storage environment prevents oxidation, moisture absorption, and degradation, ensuring optimal solderability and electrical performance.
Value-Added Services for PCBA
After PCB soldering and assembly, PCBONLINE provides comprehensive value-added services to deliver turnkey PCBA solutions tailored to meet various demands.
Functional testing
We perform functional tests tailored to customer requirements, including power-on testing, signal communication testing, load and stress testing, and real-world operating condition simulation.
Conformal coating
We apply acrylic/silicone/urethane protective layers. Conformal coatings shield PCBAs from moisture, dust, corrosion, and chemicals, ideal for outdoor, automotive, industrial, and harsh-environment applications.
Burn-in (aging) test
For high-reliability products, our burn-in chambers simulate extended operating conditions to detect early-life failures and ensure long-term reliability.
IC programming
We offer professional IC programming and calibration services for microcontrollers, EEPROM, flash memory, and wireless modules.
We can burn firmware before assembly or after PCBA completion, depending on client preference.
Finished device assembly (box-build)
PCBONLINE goes beyond PCBA by offering box-build assembly services. This includes:
- Installation of PCBAs into plastic or metal enclosures
- Integration of displays, connectors, and cables
- Assembly of mechanical hardware
- Full device testing before shipment
