What is LED PCB and its advantage? - An Useful Introduction
Tues, Dec 17, 2019
LED PCBs play a major role in modern society.
Used in a wide range of applications, it could be said that they help run the present era to a large extent, whether we realize it or not.
To begin with, it is important to understand the meaning of LED PCBs and their true nature.
For one thing, they are exactly what they sound like, which is that they are LEDs or ‘Light Emitting Diodes’, integrated into a PCB or ‘Printed Circuit Board’.
They are commonly used for a wide range of applications, ranging from simple electronics such as toys to large scale applications such as street lights.
There is much that can be said about these LED PCBs, which can serve as a useful introduction.
Some of the benefits of using LED PCBs are given in the points below.
1.) Low Heat Emission
This is by far one of the most important reasons for the usage of LED PCBs.
The most traditional source of light in a circuit or otherwise, has always had a problem with heat emission. This was because the emission of heat is an inevitable thing since it is an intrinsic property of electricity.
In the case of LED PCBs however, this isn’t much of a problem, since the problem is greatly diminished. It should be noted that the key point here is diminished and not nullified, for the heat is still generated, albeit so minuscule in comparison to that of traditional sources of lighting.
Furthermore, many of the emerging technologies come coupled with heat sinks, which allow for even a minuscule amount of heat to be eliminated. This in turn makes the entire circuitry and other components run at a relatively very low temperature.
2.) Low Power Consumption
Another important advantage of LED PCBs is that they have very low power consumption, in every single case.
It is for this reason that LED bulbs have started to become the new CFLs, and therefore are being widely promoted everywhere. In general, the need for power is cut down by as much as ten times, when one uses an LED in comparison to other sources of lighting.
The lowering of power consumption in turn will have a large-scale impact on the overall energy efficiency, and eventually, add up to cost savings.
The cost savings in turn may not be so apparent in small units, but when used on a large scale such as that of street lights or large buildings, it quickly becomes apparent.
Also to be added is that the reduction in power consumption rarely comes at the cost of brightness. In nearly every case, the degree of brightness available is about the same or even more than traditional forms of lighting.
3.) Lightweight Construction
LED PCBs tend to be lightweight in design and construction, compared to traditional forms of circuitry and design.
This in turn helps out in the larger design aspect of technology, from the aesthetics and ergonomics to overall production efficiency.
An added advantage of being lightweight is that it allows for complex designs, large scale deployment, etc.
4.) Easy to Manufacture & Integrate
The manufacturing of technology is never easy.
With a multitude of components, arrays, and so on, your average piece of technology has a lot going on in the background before it reaches the end-user.
While this is something that will never go away, what is clear is that the manufacturing process of LED PCBs is fairly simple and easy.
The end result of this is that the manufacturing process is simpler, while at the same time adding up to cost savings for the manufacturer.
5.) They are Largely Resistant to Dust & Moisture
While this is not an absolute per se, it is in comparison to the more traditional forms of circuits and lighting sources, far more resistant and durable.
This makes LED PCBs an excellent pick for both general-purpose as well as heavy-duty applications. More specifically, they make for ideal outdoor use, where there is frequent exposure to both dust and moisture, on an almost regular basis.
In addition to this, the construction can be made further durable, through the design of proper protection, sealing systems, safety features, and more, all of which can help to extend its resistance to the elements.
6.) Available in a Range of Colors & Designs
This has more to do with consumer choice and application necessity more than anything else.
The needs of the market are never the same, and that certainly holds true for LED PCBs. Given that there is always a wide range of needs for this technology, there will inevitably be a need for widespread customization, to suit that purpose.
The technological principles of LED PCBs, coupled with existing materials and advancements, allow for it to be used for a wide range of purposes, through the use of a wide range of colors, designs, and more.
7.) Long-Lasting in Nature
Last but not the least, LED PCBs are long-lasting in nature.
While this is once again use-dependent rather than an absolute, they do last longer than traditional or otherwise legacy technological systems.
There are several reasons for this, one of the most important being the construction. Traditional circuits were made from wires, which were prone to snapping and other kinds of breakage. It was in fact this aspect of early technologies, which made them unreliable.
LED PCBs on the other hand, don’t have this problem for the simple reason that the circuits are printed onto the board, rather than wires connected at the edges.
Indeed, the same construction design of the board also applies to the LEDs. Given that LEDs are essentially made up of a few components in a fairly solid form of construction, even this aspect of the technology is relatively rugged and durable.
This, in turn, provides a wide range of benefits, which range from the lack of frequent maintenance to overall cost savings, and the resulting increase of reliability.
In all, the above list of advantages of LED PCBs should help you get a better understanding of the technology.
There is indeed plenty more to this it than the points above, which you will come across, as you delve deeper into the world of electronics and technology.
